On Jan 9th,2022, The giants would run a 3rd and 9 QB sneak in the 2nd quarter of their last game of the 2021 season. This would be a representation of the Giants franchise during Gettleman time as the GM. The most wins the Giants would have during his regime is 6, which many people consider an average season for a winning team. There would be a disaster of contracts that Gettleman would make, his signing of Kenny Golloday. Golloday would only catch 1 touchdown in 2 years after getting a $72 million dollar contract, this is just one of the contracts. The other failure for the Giants would be the head coaches that Gettleman would hire. He would hire Pat Shurmur and Joe Judge, both would combine 19-46 in 4 seasons. Their offense would always ranks in the bottom 16 of team in all 4 seasons, and they were 16th in 2018 due to the back of Saquon Barkley historic rookie season. They would both be head coach for 2 seasons, and not make the playoffs in those 4 seasons. So the Giants franchise were considered a joke and needed a new regime to help them get back to the historic franchise they were once considered.
Then after the Giants let Dave Gettelman go, and were looking for a new GM to help them get back on track. Then on Jan 21, 2022, Giants would hire the assissant GM of the Buffalo Bills named Joe Schoen, who would help them find a new coach to the lead the team. He would hire the Offensive coach from the Bills, named Brian Daboll. Daboll was most known for changing Josh Allen arm and his accuracy, as Josh rookie year started with a 52.8 completion percentage to his 3rd year he improved 69.2 completion percentage. This is what the Giants were hoping what Daboll help with the 4th year Quarterback, Daniel Jones.
The Giants off-season would be a quiet one before the NFL Draft, they would let TE Evan Engram go, as they would Schoe would try to move every piece from the Gettleman and try to improve the roster bit by bits. He would terminate the contracts of Logan Ryan, and James Bradberry to get some cap space. A lot of the Gettleman era players would leave in free agency, Even Engram would sign with the Jaguars, Jabrill Peppers sign with the Patriots, Will Hernandez sign with the Cardinals. All these would be a plan by Schoen to get rid any part of Gettleman era, and he would try to start re-building the team through the draft.
Joe Schoen would be setup amazing with 2 first round picks, he would start by drafting Kayvon Thibodeaux, a outside linebacker that would help their defense. The other first round pick was to improve the offensive line and drafted the highly regarded Tackle from Alabama, Evan Neal. Both would help out a weak spot in their positions. Getting a young receiving core to help out Daniel Jones was an important part for this team, So Giants would draft a TE and WR in the 2nd and 4th round with WR Wan'dale Robinson and TE Daniel Bellinger. This draft was important to the 2022 NY Giants team.
Entering the 2022 regular season, A lot of Media Experts predicted a very .500 team who miss the playoffs, ESPN would predict over 7 wins and Sports Illustrated predict 8-9 season. They blow those expectations through the roof, when they would go to 9-7-1. They were the underdog team that would make the Wild Card. They did it with a very limited Wide reciever core, and not that much talent on it with Sterling Shepard suffering a season-ending Torn ACL and that is after Darius Slayton requested a trade from the team before the season started.
Giants first few weeks started off as a great success with upset win versus the Titans, Packers and Ravens. All projected playoff teams coming into 2022 NFL season. All of the upset wins, one player was crucial to to the wins, which was superstar RB Saquon Barkley. He had at least 100 scrimmage yards in each of those huge upset wins. Saquon and DJ rushing game is what the offense and coach Daboll were running it and relying on it. Relying on it a little to heavily, with 4 of the 7 losses, Saquon would not even get over 60 yards rushing. teams would adjust their strategy to stop the run game and make Jones pass and with his weak reciever core.
Daniel Jones was probably the biggest question mark coming in with a new coach, how Will Schoen and Daboll improve him? How will he adjust himself with the new regime? Schoen and Daboll got those question marks out of the way when they decided to use his strengths and hide his weaknesses. They would involve him in the rushing game more and have him throw less. The other problem was to fix Jones turnover problem, and they improved that by a mile as he would only throw 5 Interceptions, which was one of the improvements. The biggest that they fixed was helping Jones making the smart IQ plays and that's what cause his turnovers.
The defense was also very questionable with CB Bradberry and Ryan and LB Martinez being released, to try to improve that was from the draft with OLB Thibodeaoux and LB Micah Mcfaden and CB Cordale Flott. Only one would make a huge contribution to the team with Thibodeaux, with his strip sack fumble touchdown in week 15 game vs the Washington Commanders, which helped get a huge win to help their playoff chanches. This was helped by nose-tackle Dexter Lawrence having a his best year yet with 7.5 sacks and 68 tackles. A huge part of that with defensive coach Wink Martindale tendency to blitz on 3rd down and that would cause the pressure on the QB and would have a bigger chance of sacks for Lawrence.
All these improved players with the new regime led the Giants to a playoff spot and a game vs the Vikings in Minnesota. The biggest question mark was how they would cover Justin Jefferson but Adoore Jackson would take care of it and only held Jefferson to 47 yards. The big story from this game was how Daniel Jones gave one of his bests games as a Giant. Passing for 300 yards and getting over 70 yards rushing. Jones was helped by a huge game by Isiah Hodgins. Who was picked up from waivers in the middle of the season and became one of Jones favorite targets and had 100+ yards receiving and 1 TD in the game. The Giants would ultimately win 31- 24, after exchanging TD in the game. They would get blown out in the divisional round by the Eagles, but this season was a success in the first season in the Schoen/Daboll regime.
This would be a huge stepping stone for the franchise, from going to a joke of a franchise to a playoff team with a trustable regime where free agents are going to want to play because they know it's a winnable franchise with a front office they can trust. Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll built a culture where it's a team game and everyone is there with the same goal of wanting to win.
