On May 1st, The Yankees were in last place in the A.L. East, with a record of 15-15,. It wasn't looking good for them with many of their key players on the Injured list like Judge, Stanton, Rodon, and Severino. On may 2nd, Harrison Bader was de-activated from the Injured list and he would immediately help out the team on offense in a series vs the rays, hitting 6 for 11 with 2 home runs and 7 runs batted in. While bing one of the best defensive center fielders in the game, he brought a huge bat for the offense to get rolling.
The even bigger factor was getting Aaron Judge back from the Injured list and he is the driving force for the team and the offense. Without him in the lineup, the Yankees are 5-6 this season and 24-14 with Judge, and was a big part of the offense not clicking, only averaging 3.5 runs per game, which would be one of the lowest in the league. When he came back off the Injured list, that is when Judge and Yankees offense clicked with the help of the pitching staff. Only scoring less that 3 runs one time in the 12 games he has played since coming back. Judge would help hitting 7 home runs in 7 days and taking 3 out of 4 in Toronto.
The Yankees record since going into last place is 14-5 and the pitching was a big help with the Yankees bullpen having the best ERA in baseball with 2.87. With the emergence of Wandy Peralta as huge piece with him being the go to guy for setup/closer role for Aaron Boone.
The Yankees record since going into last place is 14-5 and pitching will help with the yankees bullpen having the best ERA in baseball with 2.87. With the emergence of Wandy Peralta as huge piece with him being the go to guy for setup/closer role for Aaron Boone. a .586 OPS off him which would be his 2nd best of his career if the season ended today. The breakout pitchers who would make a surprise into the bullpen were Ian Hamilton and Jimmy Cordero. They both got the jobs out of spring training when Tommy Khanle and Lou trouvino were both put on the I.L. and would be out for a huge amount of games in the season. both Pitchers with ERA under 3 and used to get out of jams when some of the starting pitchers get in trouble. They help keep the yankees in the lead and always keep them in the game with their pitching.
With all these improvements since the turn to May, Yankees look to get back Rodon and Stanton and get back to competing with the Rays for first place, while being back 5.5 games of first place. With a tough west-coast schedule coming up, it will be important to have more consistent starts with Luis Severino coming back from injury. Yankees will now need to rely on their starting pitching a bit more as they are going against some tough teams, and tough offenses in the league like the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Nice analysis
Don’t t like the Yankees, but very well written nonetheless.
